The Serviceman's
Readjustment Act of 1944, also known as the G. I. Bill. This was a
law that provided college for returning World War II veterans. This
law also gave the veterans one year of unemployment compensation. It
also provided many different types of loans for returning veterans to
buy homes and start businesses and farms. It reached every veteran
who had been on active duty during the war years for at least ninety
days and had not been dishonorably discharged. The veteran did not
have to be in a combat situation, but just had to be on active duty
during the war.
Why did the
government think that more G.I.s would take advantage of the G.I.Bill
for unemployment then for education?
How did the
schools feel when the G.I. Bill was being passed and why did they
feel this way?
I think the GI Bill was a really good idea because it gave so many people such as Dick Koch who had the dream of being a doctor come true. But men took a rise in this while on 3 percent of woman from the 350,000 went to college. but there were many more educated people thanks to the GI bill like 67,000 were doctors, 238,000 teachers, 91,000 scientists, 450,000 engineers and so on. it made such a big impact on our country and gave a lot of people a chance to go to school who before the bill was passed did not have a chance.
